Faythe Levine
Mark Metcalf talks with artist, filmmaker and entrepreneur Faythe Levine about her roots, DIY and new film "Sign Painters."
For the better part of the last decade, Faythe Levine has played an integral role in Milwaukee’s DIY arts & crafts community. Her accomplishments include founding the Art vs. Craft fair in 2004, producing and directing the highly successful film Handmade Nation, and curating Sky High Gallery, in Bay View.
Levine’s latest project is a film (and companion book) called Sign Painters, documenting the nearly lost art of sign painting and the people continuing to keep it alive. With the film set for release later this year, Levine sat down with Mark Metcalf to discuss the film, DIY and more.
“Backstage with Mark Metcalf,” a 2011 Milwaukee Press Club award-winner, is engineered and produced by Sahan Jayasuriya. The weekly series, focusing on many of Milwaukee’s behind-the-scenes personalities, alternates between short (10-15 min.) and long (25-30 min.) segments. I saw Faythe Levine at the Mary Nohl Fellowship opening reception at Inova, and her work there (photographs) was lush and filled with meaning (some of which I’m sure will be in Sign Painters, though perhaps as film instead of stills).
She certainly deserves her fellowship money! Mark Metcalf, thank you for reminding us about Faythe’s film!
