Beginning May 20, we stay open from 10 am to 5 pm every day except Thursdays, and until 7:30 pm on Wednesdays.
The Lynden Sculpture Garden is located at 2145 West Brown Deer Road. Admission is $9 general, $7 for students and seniors. Members and children under 6 are free. Admission includes access to the sculpture garden and house. All events listed below are free with admission unless otherwise indicated. Memberships are available.

ROBIN JEBAVY: RECENT PAINTINGS

Robin Jebavy makes still life paintings of glassware. Her project, however, is much larger: to offer the viewer an experience that evokes the original, sublime, oceanic feelings of union with the strange and mysterious “other,” of self with universe. Her paintings invite the viewer to part the curtain and sense oneness with the world–a state in which we found ourselves in the mother’s womb before birth, and from which we all emerged. In her compositions Jebavy often includes glassware forms that call to mind Baroque artworks, such as Bernini’s expansive Baldachin in St. Peter’s Cathedral, or illusionistic Italian ceiling paintings and cathedrals, building altar-like architectural spaces that are at once intimate and metaphysical, domestic and transcendental. In her recent paintings, she experiments with the use of ornate cut glass forms to achieve a feeling of the “embroidered” interconnectedness of self and world.

Lynden opened to the public on May 30, 2010. Five years later to the day we celebrate this milestone by flying kites (and making them), planting a butterfly garden, and hosting artist projects. Expect a display from the Milwaukee Bonsai Society, a food truck and more!

BONSAI FOR PARENTS & CHILDREN: A WORKSHOP WITH THE MILWAUKEE BONSAI SOCIETY

Fee: $60/ $55 members of Lynden or the Milwaukee Bonsai Society. This is the price for an adult/child pair, and includes one tree to take home. Children should be in grades 1-5.

A bonsai is a living sculpture, changing from day to day, season to season, and year to year. Creating and caring for a bonsai combines the principles of design with the science of horticulture; it develops an appreciation for the world of trees and the world of three-dimensional artmaking. In this hands-on workshop, you and your child will learn the basic principals and techniques of bonsai design, creating your very own bonsai from tropical material and transplanting it into a ceramic bonsai container to take home.

Grab your mother and bring her along for this daylong workshop that will explore easy and artful ways to apply dye to pre-hemmed silk scarves. From simple techniques such as tie-dyeing, resist and salt, to interesting ways to make marks, we’ll let ourselves be inspired by the wonderful art and nature surrounding us at Lynden. Each student will create three wearable and uniquely painted scarves. No experience (or mother) required, and all materials supplied.

Working in clay is deeply satisfying, and making pottery allows one to explore aesthetics and function simultaneously. In this workshop we will take the bowl from start to finish, using porcelain as our clay material. We will learn three simple techniques: coiling, pinching, and using a slump mold. To finish, we will embellish our three bowl forms with surface decoration using texturing techniques and brushwork. The pots will then be fired with a clear glaze to protect the surface and make them functional.

Drop into our studio for informal art exploration. Come for 30 minutes or stay for 2 1/2 hours; visit weekly or stop by when you need an after-school activity; bring a friend or sibling or try it on your own. Each week we’ll introduce different materials, processes and themes, and get you started on a project. We’ll focus on three-dimensional artmaking–though we will also do plenty of painting, drawing and collaging–and make use of Lynden’s special resources: the collection of monumental sculpture and 40 acres of park, lake and woodland. Watch for occasional outdoor artmaking days, too.

The 40 acres that house the Lynden collection of monumental outdoor sculpture are also home to many birds, insects, frogs, mammals and plants. Naturalist Naomi Cobb offers a nature program that explores a different theme each month, taking into account the changing seasons, and provides an opportunity for those with very small children to engage in outdoor play and manipulation of art materials. The theme for May is blooming.

Spring is the season full of potential, a time to discover nature’s renewal, and we will go looking for the young, new growth on the land and in the water. In the studio, the emphasis will be on experimentation: in a series of drawing, papermaking and casting projects we will uncover new ideas in our work.

Lynden’s art and nature camps for children aged 20 months to 13 years integrate our collection of monumental outdoor sculpture with the natural ecology of park, pond, and woodland. Led by artists, naturalists, and art educators, the camps explore the intersection of art and nature through collaborative discovery and hands-on artmaking, using all of Lynden’s 40 acres to create a joyful outdoor experience. Each camp concludes with an informal showing for family and friends.

June is a month of many beginnings–the summer camp season commences in June and continues non-stop through the end of August; we open a new exhibition, Dan Torop: Frozen Period (you can join the artist for a picnic on June 17); Naomi Cobb launches a new summer series, Story Time in the Garden–but there are also several old favorites on the schedule. The Woodland Pattern poetry workshop returns from June 1-5, and features writer Andrew Schelling. Sally Duback kicks off the outdoor workshop season with a papermaking session on June 6, and the Milwaukee Bonsai Society will offer a Kusamono workshop for adults on the 13th and Bonsai workshop for teens on the 28th. Tai Chi in the Garden with Angela Laughingheart begins on June 7 (we have a Family Workshop that afternoon) and runs for four consecutive Sunday mornings. Kids can bring their fathers and grandfathers to Tai Chi for Daddy and Me on Father’s Day (June 21). Dogs have their day on the 20th, and the first of our monthly summer Patio Tours (this one the special Father’s Day edition) is scheduled for the 21st. Linda Wervey Vitamvas will be back with a ceramics workshop on June 27 (this time the subject is porcelain vases), and Wes Tank gets you going with your GoPro in a workshop on June 28. We will also be hosting guests in June: the Danceworks Performance Company and Milwaukee Opera Theatre perform Fairy Queen Fantasy on June 19-20.
