Harley-Davidson Museum announces (P)ART: Photographs Revealing the Art of Mechanical Form

Special photography exhibit opens during January Gallery Night in Milwaukee

By - Jan 9th, 2015 04:52 pm

The Harley-Davidson Museum begins the new year with the opening of (P)ART: Photographs Revealing the Art of Mechanical Form.  This new exhibit opens Jan. 16 and runs through May 17.  (P)ART showcases 29 carefully staged and artistic photographs that highlight the style of legendary Harley-Davidson motorcycle parts.

The photographs on display, some dating back to 1912, come from the Harley-Davidson Archives collection, which houses thousands of images of individual motorcycle parts and components. The images selected for the exhibit were used in advertisements, catalogs, manuals and other company publications. Each one provides a glimpse into Harley-Davidson’s early commitment to the form and function of a motorcycle and to presenting parts in a more sculptural form. Some images on display include:

1947 Big Twin Dash Assembly – This image was used for marketing purposes and was retouched through airbrushing. The original photo is also part of the Archives collection.

This image was used in a 1938 advertisement for Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and is an example of the more artistic visions for motorcycle parts. During this time, the “shadow effect” was used broadly in Harley-Davidson advertising.

The (P)ART exhibit is located in the Archives bridge on the second floor of the main Museum building. Access to the exhibit is included with general Museum admission. For more information, visit h-dmuseum.com.
