Grupo Rebolú’s Afro-Caribbean Rhythms and Colombian Traditions to Heat Up Latino Arts’ Spring Season

MILWAUKEE – February 25, 2015 – Latino Arts’ Spring 2015 Season comes to a close on Friday, March 13 with a taste of Colombia’s Caribbean coast with a performance from Grupo Rebolú and the opening reception for Vivian Vivas’ latest collection of photographs Visiones Tomando Vuelo.

Childhood friends Ronald Polo and Morris Cañate wanted to promote the rich traditional music of their ancestors—the Afro-descendants of Colombia’s Caribbean coast, so they created

From traditional songs to original compositions that remain faithful to these ancestral roots, their music is rich in energy, history, and danceability.

Their original compositions and arrangements of classic Afro-Colombian music create a modern cultural event rooted in the Carnaval de Barranquilla. It is their belief that these folkloric traditions should continually evolve over time and with the ideas of new generations of folklorists, a belief which is surely reflected in Grupo Rebolú’s music. Grupo Rebolú will perform in the Latino Arts Auditorium on Friday, March 13 at 7:30 p.m. The band will also take the stage for two student matinee performances on Thursday, March 12 at 10:30 a.m. and Friday, March 13 at 10:30 a.m.

Tickets for the evening show are $15 for general admission, $10 for seniors 60 and over and full-time students, and $8 per student in groups of 10 or more. Born and raised in Venezuela, Vivian Vivas began her artistic career studying architecture at the Central University of Venezuela, where she also developed her passion for photography. Visiones Tomando Vuelo [Visions Taking Flight] is a study of culture, nature, and wildlife, much of which is the observation and photographing of birds at the Horicon Marsh Wildlife Refuge. The opening reception for Visiones Tomando Vuelo will take place on Friday, March 13 from 5:00 p.m. through 7:30 p.m. in the Latino Arts Gallery, and the exhibition will be on display through May 22.

Exhibitions in the Latino Arts Gallery are open to the public Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. for a suggested donation of $1.
