The Lynden Sculpture Garden is located at 2145 West Brown Deer Road. Admission is $9 general, $7 for students and seniors. Members and children under 6 are free. Admission includes access to the sculpture garden and house. All events listed below are free with admission unless otherwise indicated. Memberships are available.
HOURS
In February, the Lynden Sculpture Garden is open Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 am to 5 pm; and Saturdays and Sundays from 12 noon to 5 pm (closed Thursdays).
A NOTE ON ICE SKATING
We will offer ice skating on one of the ponds at Lynden on Saturdays and Sundays from 12-4 pm when weather and ice conditions permit. Please visit us on Facebook for ice skating updates.

URBAN WOOD ENCOUNTER

The landscape at Lynden is dotted with more than 600 trees. There were, at one time, many more: the majority of the elms on the grounds were lost to Dutch elm disease. Now, with the emerald ash borer making its way into southeastern Wisconsin, we think a lot about how to turn our ash trees into a sustainable resource. These trees have shown up in everything from the temporary art installations on the grounds to the lintels in our parking lot. Urban Wood Encounter, now in its fourth year, is designed to introduce the public to the environmental value of urban wood within the context of an exhibition of fine furniture. Urban wood comes from the trees that line our streets, shade our homes, and define our parks–trees that are not harvested for their timber value but instead often find their way into landfills when they succumb to age, injury or disease. According to the US Forest Service, the wood “waste” generated in this country’s urban areas, if processed, could produce approximately 3.8 billion board feet of lumber annually. In an effort to advance the sustainable recovery and the best use of the products of urban forests, Urban Wood Encounter challenges furniture makers and designers to create inspiring, thoughtful, and beautiful furniture from this regionally abundant and underutilized natural resource.

Lynden welcomes winter with a day of outdoor art-making, studio activities, tree-walks, and whatever winter activities the weather permits. This year’s carnival is curated by Braden Baer, and features visiting artist Claire Ashley with an Interactive Sculptural Event. Filmmaker Wes Tank will be leading a guerilla movie-making activity, scripting and shooting a film on the Lynden grounds in 2 hours; artist-in-residence Pegi Christiansen will be creating a Winter Forest in Brian Nigus’s Sightseer; and Roy Staab will create a site-specific work. Davey Tree Expert will be on hand to demonstrate tree-climbing in our beautiful elms. Plus nature activities, a sculpture treasure hunt, outdoor games, a food truck, and a bonfire.

Lynden is a registered site for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Project FeederWatch. The main goal of this citizen science project is to combine the interests of backyard bird watchers with the needs of ornithologists who study bird populations. By making simple, standardized counts of the birds in their yards (or, in this case, at Lynden) and reporting them to the FeederWatch database, FeederWatchers contribute directly to the scientific understanding of bird populations. These observations help scientists study changes in the distribution and abundance of feeder birds over time. We’ve established a new bird feeder on the grounds, using the recommended seeds to attract birds through the seasons. We have binoculars and color charts to help us identify the birds at our feeder. Now, we need bird viewers of all ages and experience levels to join us on our siting days to help tally our observations for the project. We have designated two consecutive days each month from November through April for orientations. Once you’ve received this training, you can sign up for your own birdwatching slot.

If you are the proud owner of a new GoPro, or if you’ve had one for a while but want to learn how to get the most out of the versatile camera, this is the workshop for you. The GoPro is a natural fit for people who love the outdoors, and in this small, very hands-on workshop filmmaker Wes Tank will familiarize you with your camera, with a focus on shooting during the winter. We’ll learn about settings, accessories, and resources; try out different shooting techniques on the Lynden grounds; pick up a few tricks for filming without being able to see what you’re looking at; and experiment with slow motion and time lapse.

Yevgeniya Kaganovich and her student assistants take up residence in the studio to make the next “planting” of grow, Kaganovich’s durational installation. Drop in to watch or participate as Kaganovich fuses the layers of plastic to create a surface similar to leather or skin, molds the skin into plant-like volumes, stuffs the volumes with more bags, and connects the forms with plastic bag “thread.” Tasks include cutting sheets and strips; fusing sheets and tubes; sewing bulb forms and connecting them to bases; crocheting tubes and necks; stuffing stalks; and assembling the plants.

This daylong workshop that will explore easy and artful ways to apply dye to pre-hemmed silk scarves. From simple techniques such as tie-dyeing, resist and salt, to interesting ways to make marks, we’ll let ourselves be inspired by the wonderful art and nature surrounding us at Lynden. Each student will create three wearable and uniquely painted scarves using this centuries-old painting form. No experience required, and all materials supplied.

Stamping is a form of printmaking, and we invite you to drop into the studio for this all-ages introduction to rubber stamp making. We will create our own personalized rubber stamps from start to finish, and try out some stamping on paper. You can take your stamp home to use over and over again on handwritten letters and envelopes, or to include in your own stationery design.

Working in clay is deeply satisfying, and making pottery allows one to explore aesthetics and function simultaneously. In this workshop we will make two vases from start to finish, using porcelain as our clay material. We will use the handbuilding technique of slabs, piecing them together to form our vases. We may even add a handle to transform a vase into a mug or small pitcher! To finish, we will embellish our work with surface decoration using texturing techniques and brushwork. The vessels will then be fired with a clear glaze to protect the surface and make them functional.

Shibori is an ancient Japanese resist-dye technique that involves creasing, folding, binding, and knotting to create beautiful patterns. In this workshop, you’ll begin by making the dyes (some of them sourced from your own kitchen or garden), and will then learn the basics of Shibori to make a scarf or set of striking tea towels.

Drop into our studio for informal art exploration. Come for 30 minutes or stay for 2 1/2 hours; visit weekly or stop by when you need an after-school activity; bring a friend or sibling or try it on your own. Each week we’ll introduce different materials, processes and themes, and get you started on a project. We’ll focus on three-dimensional artmaking–though we will also do plenty of painting, drawing and collaging–and make use of Lynden’s special resources: the collection of monumental sculpture and 40 acres of park, lake and woodland. Watch for occasional outdoor artmaking days, too.

Naturalist Naomi Cobb offers a nature program that explores a different theme each month, taking into account the changing seasons, and provides an opportunity for those with very small children to engage in outdoor play and manipulation of art materials. Naturalist Naomi Cobb has developed a parent/child nature program that explores a different theme each month, taking into account the changing seasons. Wednesdays in the Garden focuses on 4 and 5 year olds and their caregivers, and offers a guided, hands-on, all-senses-engaged exploration of the natural world at Lynden. These outings will include stories and art projects. Consider dropping in for a picnic lunch before the program begins. The theme for February is hearts.

Winter can appear to be a silent, frozen time–a call for hibernation and long naps. However, there are creatures out every day finding food, and quiet processes continue in the plants and ponds. We will track the mysteries of life in winter, using snow and ice as aids. Warming up in the studio, we’ll use animal tracks in the snow at Lynden as inspiration for creating wintery diorama sculptures that tell stories of life in winter.
COMING UP IN MARCH
We begin March with a new exhibition of recent paintings by Robin Jebavy (March 1-May 31). There are two opportunities to stroll around the grounds with Naomi Cobb: a micro moon walk on March 6 and a bird walk on March 22. March workshops include: textile marbling (March 7) and tapestry weaving (March 21), both with Jamie Bertsch; ceramics with Linda Wervey Vitamvas (March 14); and Editing Your GoPro Footage with Wes Tank (March 22). Our family workshop, Felt Marbles, is scheduled for March 15. There are two School’s Out Workshops, on March 6 (Tree House) and March 20 (Bird House); and a homeschool day on March 26 (the topic is light). Project FeederWatch orientations are scheduled for March 10, 11, 16, 17, 22 and 23. Art Drop-In continues on Wednesdays; Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the Garden are scheduled for March 24 and 25, respectively; there’s a grow workshop on March 8; and dogs are welcome on March 21.
