The Lynden Sculpture Garden is located at 2145 West Brown Deer Road. Admission is $9 general, $7 for students and seniors. Members and children under 6 are free. Admission includes access to the sculpture garden and house. All events listed below are free with admission unless otherwise indicated. Memberships are available.
HOURS
In December, the Lynden Sculpture Garden is open Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 am to 5 pm; and Saturdays and Sundays from 12 noon to 5 pm (closed Thursdays). The sculpture garden will be closed from December 24-January 4.

The landscape at Lynden is dotted with more than 600 trees. There were, at one time, many more: the majority of the elms on the grounds were lost to Dutch elm disease. Now, with the emerald ash borer making its way into southeastern Wisconsin, we think a lot about how to turn our ash trees into a sustainable resource. These trees have shown up in everything from the temporary art installations on the grounds to the lintels in our parking lot. Urban Wood Encounter, now in its fourth year, is designed to introduce the public to the environmental value of urban wood within the context of an exhibition of fine furniture. Urban wood comes from the trees that line our streets, shade our homes, and define our parks–trees that are not harvested for their timber value but instead often find their way into landfills when they succumb to age, injury or disease. According to the US Forest Service, the wood “waste” generated in this country’s urban areas, if processed, could produce approximately 3.8 billion board feet of lumber annually. In an effort to advance the sustainable recovery and the best use of the products of urban forests, Urban Wood Encounter challenges furniture makers and designers to create inspiring, thoughtful, and beautiful furniture from this regionally abundant and underutilized natural resource.

WORKSHOPS & ACTIVITIES FOR ADULTS AND FAMILIES
HOLIDAY GIFTMAKING WORKSHOPS
Lynden is offering a series of holiday giftmaking workshops between November 22 and December 14. They range from simple activities suitable for families with smaller children to more advanced workshops for adults. To enhance the celebratory spirit, we will have light refreshments available for participants. Whether you are making a gift for yourself or another, these workshops should provide a cheerful atmosphere for art making as we head into winter. Join Leslie Perrino for this daylong workshop that will explore easy and artful ways to apply dye to pre-hemmed silk scarves. From simple techniques such as tie-dyeing, resist and salt, to interesting ways to make marks, we’ll let ourselves be inspired by the wonderful art and nature surrounding us at Lynden. Each student will create three wearable and uniquely painted scarves. We will also make some hand painted silk ribbon to use if you would like to make a gift of one of your scarves. No experience required, and all materials supplied.

Lynden is a registered site for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Project FeederWatch. The main goal of this citizen science project is to combine the interests of backyard bird watchers with the needs of ornithologists who study bird populations. By making simple, standardized counts of the birds in their yards (or, in this case, at Lynden) and reporting them to the FeederWatch database, FeederWatchers contribute directly to the scientific understanding of bird populations. These observations help scientists study changes in the distribution and abundance of feeder birds over time. We’ve established a new bird feeder on the grounds, using the recommended seeds to attract birds through the seasons. We have binoculars and color charts to help us identify the birds at our feeder. Now, we need bird viewers of all ages and experience levels to join us on our siting days to help tally our observations for the project. We have designated two consecutive days each month from November through April for orientations. Once you’ve received this training, you can sign up for your own birdwatching slot.

Lynden’s Jeremy Stepien guides you through the process of making a garlic basket–perfect for your own home or as a gift. Learn a traditional twining weave using a combination of willow from the sculpture garden and basket-weaving reed. We’ll use raffia to add color and texture to the basic weave. No prior weaving experience required.
FAMILY WORKSHOP: WINDOWSILL TERRARIUMS

Holiday season is upon us and we will be making terrariums—miniature environments— that will recall warmer seasons when displayed on your windowsill. Choose among small glass bottles and vials to create your own unique, hand-made gift. Select dried materials that require no attention or construct a living terrarium that will grow with your care.

Drop into our studio for informal art exploration. Come for 30 minutes or stay for 2 1/2 hours; visit weekly or stop by when you need an after-school activity; bring a friend or sibling or try it on your own. Each week we’ll introduce different materials, processes and themes, and get you started on a project. We’ll focus on three-dimensional artmaking–though we will also do plenty of painting, drawing and collaging–and make use of Lynden’s special resources: the collection of monumental sculpture and 40 acres of park, lake and woodland. Watch for occasional outdoor artmaking days, too.

Naturalist Naomi Cobb offers a nature program that explores a different theme each month, taking into account the changing seasons, and provides an opportunity for those with very small children to engage in outdoor play and manipulation of art materials. The theme for December is winter fun.

Naturalist Naomi Cobb has developed a parent/child nature program that explores a different theme each month, taking into account the changing seasons. Wednesdays in the Garden focuses on 4 and 5 year olds and their caregivers, and offers a guided, hands-on, all-senses-engaged exploration of the natural world at Lynden. These outings will include stories and art projects. Consider dropping in for a picnic lunch before the program begins. The theme for December is winter fun.
COMING UP IN JANUARY
We are putting together our winter schedule but know that Light Up the Garden, our annual night-time lantern walk, will take place on January 18; our homeschool day (January 22) will focus on shadow and space; the theme of our school’s out workshop (January 26) is mysteries of winter; and the Women’s Speaker Series returns with a visit from Margaret Hawkins, author of Lydia’s Party (January 28). Art Drop-in resumes on January 7; dogs may visit on January 17; and we have several workshops lined up, including ceramics with Linda Wervey Vitamvas (January 19) and enameling with Leslie Perrino (January 25). Parents and small children will investigate winter surprises in Tuesdays in the Garden (January 13) and Wednesdays in the Garden (January 14). And save the date for our Winter Carnival on February 7!
