New Thai, BBQ Places Opening

Openings were announced for five new places, including a Thai restaurant, beer garden and BBQ diner. A good week for Milwaukee-area diners.

Antigua Coffee House: Owners Citlali Mendieta-Ramos and Nicholas Ramos have owned Antigua Latin Restaurant located at 5822 W. Burnham St. since 2006; the restaurant serves Latin, Cuban, Puerto Rican, and Spanish foods. Their new venture, a recently opened breakfast and lunch spot, can be found at 813 S. 60th St. Antigua serves coffees, smoothies, breakfast sandwiches, hamburgers, salads, and an assortment of pastries Mondays through Fridays. The space will also be available to rent on the weekend, teach cooking classes, and have catering services.

Tuk’s Thai Kitchen: The space on the corner of Locust and Weil in Riverwest will once again house a neighborhood eatery. Former tenant, Antonio’s Pizza, had a kitchen only fit for pizza making. Tuk’s is set to redesign the space to fit the Thai restaurant’s needs.

Humboldt Park Beer Garden: Open weekdays from 4 to 9 p.m. and weekends from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., this new beer garden is a partnership between Milwaukee County Parks and Saint Francis Brewing Company. Craft brews include Lust Weissbier, Envy I.P.A., Wrath Amber Ale, and a selection of seasonal beers. A half-liter is $5; a liter is $10. Wine and maple root beer will also be served along side foods like Bavarian cheese soup, Bavarian pretzels, hot dogs, veggie dogs and bratwursts. The garden will be open during Chill on the Hill. Although guests will not be able to bring drinks into the music areas, they can bring their own food to the beer garden.

Miss Beverly’s Deluxe Barbeque: Located at 5601 Broad St. in Greendale, Beverly’s takes its diners on a trip down memory lane. The entire restaurant is furnished to resemble a 50s style diner, complete with retro General Electric refrigerator, scores of vintage soda pop, portraits of Etta James, Buck Owens, Muddy Waters and Buddy Guy adorning the walls, and blues music playing throughout the store. The menu features barbequed pork, ribs, beef brisket, fried chicken, and traditional sides like corn bread, macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, BBQ baked beans, and house made potato salad. Each table has a variety of different sauces like “Sweet and Tangy” and “House on Fire.” Beverly’s also offers carry-out and catering.

Butch’s Red Mill & Eatery: This new place, located at 1005 S. Elm Grove Road, Brookfield, will serve sandwiches, pub snacks and Friday fish fry. It’s owned by Butch Schettle, who also owns Butch’s Old Casino Steak House in downtown Milwaukee, Butch’s Steak House in Stone Bank and Big Mouth Frog bar in Oak Creek. The Red Mill had a long history as a jazz club.

Village Pub: This one is more iffy. This Shorewood pub, winner of OnMilwaukee’s “Best Suburban Bar” award, unexpectedly closed its doors earlier this summer. Wednesday, the bar updated their twitter account stating Village Pub will “open soon”. The pub is most likely attempting to renew their liquor license. A Shorewood Special Village Board meeting was held, on Thursday, to discuss the possibility of renewing the license. The bar is located at 4488 N. Oakland Ave.

Now Closing:

88 Keys Piano Martini Lounge: The West Allis bar, located at 7211 W. Greenfield since 2009, has closed, said owner Greg Barczak, who recently suffered a heart attack.
