 Dancers Who Defy Gravity

The human pretzels of the Pilobolus dance troupe perform this week at the Wilson Center.

Strange but true: Pilobolus Dance Theatre is named after a type of fungus which propels its spores with extraordinary speed and strength.  As the New Yorker critic Andrew Boyston has written, “in a performance of Pilobolus Dance Theatre, you forget what you’re looking at;  the dancers move so skillfully, so symbiotically, that they cease to resemble people at all. Plants, animals, all manner of objects and suggestions of objects arise and then dissolve, and at the end of an evening you feel as though you’ve glimpsed many worlds.”

Azimuth5The visionary dance troupe was formed in 1971 at Dartmouth College. Since its inception, the original company has created 115 dance pieces and toured to more than 64 countries.  The dancers — who often suggest human pretzels —  are constantly forming diverse collaborations and breaking down barriers that form the way people think about dance. The choreography is rooted in engineering and physics while the acrobats and athletes that make up the troupe use innovation and improvisation to create works that dance between the line of illusion and reality. They have performed on a number of national television programs, from Sesame Street to the Academy Awards. Also in the strange but true department: They hold the world record for “most people crammed into a Mini Cooper.”

Great concept, Isabel (dancers who defy gravity) as we see this performance through your eyes and your well-chosen words. I especially like this bit of your writing, “the dancers move so skillfully, so symbiotically, that they cease to resemble people at all. Plants, animals, all manner of objects and suggestions of objects arise and then dissolve, and at the end of an evening you feel as though you’ve glimpsed many worlds.”
