These are a few of my favorite things

Just when I was beginning to welcome the return of sweater weather,  Fashion Week comes along and has me craving the light and breezy looks of Spring 2011.

At New York’s event in September, fashion houses showcased their forecasts and trends for the upcoming season. While designers like Oscar de la Renta and the late Alexander McQueen created marvelous works of art to be seen on the Red Carpet or at big A-list events, others unveiled “Ready-to-Wear” lines that will be available to the public almost immediately. These lines are the basis for all trends to come in the next six months.

Spring 2011 is all about neutrals. It’s probably safe to say that the season’s hottest items will come in nude, white, gold, brown or khaki. Those colors dominated the runway and are perfect to lighten things up for warmer weather.

With this sort of trend, though, the most important thing to remember is moderation — don’t go head-to-toe neutral.  Try to look for accessories that will add color to you ensemble — shoes, scarves, belts or a clutch — you will need something to make you stand out!

To avoid looking drab, designers threw in little bits of color here and there with strategically added jewel tones. The unmistakable vibrancy of these colors is sure to turn heads on the street. I really enjoyed seeing the tones mixed together. Those outfits really told a story and will speak for themselves when worn with confidence.

Another trend to look out for is clean solids mixed with bright patterns. Whether the pattern is floral, gingham or a mod 60’s color block, mix it with something less bold to create a great balance for your outfit.

To go along with the light and bright theme comes the return of the Grecian look on the runway. Elegant, draped fabrics were everywhere, creating a look that was light and airy, making for some beautiful dresses and tops to frolic in once the snow melts.

It’s hard to think of spring and summer when the snow hasn’t even hit the ground yet, but keep these tips in mind when you hit the stores for all those after-Christmas sales. Plus, these warm and breezy trends will give you something to look forward to in the dark, bundled months of winter.
